Read Time: 3.0 minutes

Welcome back, Creator!

Whether you have been in the content creation space for six months or three years, you know all major social media platforms have pushed that vertical video since TikTok jumped onto the content scene in 2019-2020.

Well, in 2024, TikTok isn’t the same algorithmically as it once was, and it has begun to follow suit with prior social platforms as it matures. And against content creator wishes and exactly what put TikTok onto the map, short form content, they are embarking upon the desire for content creators to upload much longer content. And in that content, they want it horizontal.

Yeah, that means turning your phone on its side in the landscape. Gasp!

Trivia Question: What is the projected total number of social media users worldwide for 2024? (Answer at the end of the Newsletter).

TODAY’S MENU

  • TikTok Eyes Landscape Videos: Even when using the test, users must press to have the video flipped and then rotate the screen.

  • Meta’s AI-Based Ad Targeting Systems: Last week, Meta held a roundtable discussion on AI strategy in marketing and where advertisers are focusing their efforts in 2024.

  • Why Funnels Work: There’s a lot of hype surrounding funnels. Let’s discuss why they will remain superior.

CURRENT NEWS

TikTok Eyes Landscape Videos

TikTok is experimenting with a new horizontal viewing mode, allowing users to watch full-screen landscape videos. Initially available to select users, a "full screen" button will appear for those with access, enabling the rotation of square or rectangular videos for a better viewing experience.

TikTok aims to diversify its content beyond short clips, introducing longer video options up to 10 minutes long to attract creators from platforms like YouTube. This move comes as YouTube launches "Shorts" to compete with TikTok's success.

Previously, TikTok lacked support for landscape videos, requiring users to rotate their devices manually. However, even with the test, users must still manually flip and rotate the screen, unlike other platforms like YouTube, where videos adjust automatically.

The broader rollout and integration of this feature remain uncertain for TikTok. Will it or won’t it work for TikTok? We shall see!

CREATOR AI STRATEGIES

Meta’s AI-Based Ad Targeting Systems

Meta recently discussed its evolving AI-driven ad tools and their impact on marketing strategies for 2024 during a roundtable. This included insights from Meta's ad executives and Cody Plofker, CMO of Jones Road Beauty. Key points highlighted the strong adoption of Meta’s AI features for content generation, such as text variation and image expansion, which have shown promising results for brand partners.

The session also noted the significant role of click-to-message ads and AI content recommendations in driving engagement, with 40% of Instagram content now being AI-recommended, increasing platform engagement time.

Video content has been particularly effective, with a notable year-over-year increase in daily watch time and reel resharing. Meta emphasized the effectiveness of its AI targeting tools, like Advantage campaigns, over traditional interest targeting, encouraging brands to rely on its AI for better ad performance.

Despite initial hesitance from brands fearing loss of control, using probabilistic modeling in targeting has enhanced creative efforts and overall results.

Meta’s focus on AI and the success of its Advantage campaigns have contributed to a significant recovery in its ad business, suggesting that embracing automated ad processes could be beneficial for brands looking to optimize their marketing strategies.

SOCIAL BUSINESS SCALING

Why Funnels Just Work

In the digital marketing sphere, funnels and websites are often discussed as mutually exclusive, with a recent emphasis on the effectiveness of funnels.

However, understanding both elements' unique roles and complementary nature is crucial for a successful digital strategy.

A funnel is a structured path that guides users from initial awareness to conversion and loyalty, designed with a specific goal and audience in mind. It contrasts with websites, which offer a broader exploration space for visitors. Despite their differences, both are essential to a comprehensive digital marketing plan.

Funnel Main Points

  • Funnels vs. Websites: Funnels guide users through a linear journey toward a specific action, whereas websites provide a platform for broader exploration.

  • Conversion Optimization: Funnels are designed to minimize leaks (lost customers) by increasing engagement and optimizing conversion rates.

  • User Journey Stages: The funnel encompasses several stages—awareness, consideration, conversion, and loyalty—each with specific objectives to engage and convert users.

  • Enhancing Funnels: Understanding your audience and providing relevant, specific content is key to maintaining engagement and inspiring conversions. Utilizing scarcity ethically can also boost conversions.

  • Integration with Websites: Funnels and websites should not operate in isolation but rather complement each other to enhance user experience and conversion opportunities.

Conclusion

While there's growing hype around funnels as a standalone solution for business growth, they should not replace websites but instead work with them. Recognizing funnels' and websites' distinct yet complementary roles allows for a more nuanced and effective digital marketing strategy.

By leveraging both strengths, businesses can create a more dynamic and successful online presence, driving better engagement, conversions, and long-term growth.
